A question clients often wonder is: “how long does it take to design a brand?” Typically for me, the process can take anywhere from several weeks to several months depending on the complexity and size of the project.
Before starting work with a new branding client I always outline the project schedule so they can factor it into their own timelines and also know when they can expect to hear from me. Here is my typical step-by-step branding process broken down for you with approximate times for each step.
01. Brand Discovery (typically 1-2 hours)
The first step in the branding process is to jump into the brand strategy. This is where I gain a deeper understanding of the heart and soul of your business. Through a collaborative process, we delve deep into your brand’s ethos, aspirations and unique value proposition. Utilising a comprehensive brand discovery questionnaire, we set the intentions for your brand, your messaging and the deliverables. Additionally, this can be completed together in person, through a Zoom session or by yourself – whichever you prefer.
02. Final Brief (typically 2 business days)
With all of the information gathered during our discovery phase, I then curate a comprehensive final brief. This document serves as a blueprint, encapsulating your goals and our discussions. Then you will have the opportunity to check and approve this before proceeding.
03. Research (typically 1-2 weeks)
Armed with the foundational insights that we’ve uncovered together, I then jump into my research to ensure you are uniquely positioned in the market – this includes research into competitors, peers and aspirational brand leaders. This will inform our creative direction and ensure your brand’s distinctiveness.
04. Brand Board (typically 1 week)
The brand strategy board lays out our findings and marks the beginning of your brand’s visual journey by bringing ideas, colours and imagery together to shape and refine the emerging identity. This comprehensive strategy will uncover the conceptual and aesthetic direction of your brand.
05. Brand Presentation (typically 2-3 weeks)
After extensive conceptual development and experimentation I’ll prepare a meticulously crafted brand presentation. This showcase includes one design concept, brand colours, brand fonts and sample applications. Complemented by a detailed rationale, the presentation serves as a testament to the depth of thought invested in every element.
06. Brand guidelines (typically 1 week)
A brand guidelines document will be provided which outlines the standards and specifications for correct application of your brand across diverse mediums. Alongside this, a comprehensive suite of brand files is also provided, ensuring seamless integration and adherence to your brand’s identity.
07. Production
Should printing or production be required, I can also facilitate this process seamlessly. Providing you with quotes, timeframes and finished art files, I ensure your brand emerges ready to make its mark in the world.
